Varicose veins are a problem of their own, as is insomnia. These two conditions occur independently so often that we rarely associate them as bed-mates. Perhaps we should. In many cases, varicose veins are looked at as a cosmetic problem. They’re thick. They’re ropy. They might bulge. These characteristics certainly aren’t attractive. However, varicose veins may also cause leg aching, fatigue, and muscle cramps. These symptoms may occur at any time of day. As it seems to go, though, they are more pronounced at night.

Are Varicose Veins Keeping You Up at Night?

It’s one thing for the cramping or aching or itching of varicose veins to intensify at night. It’s another thing for varicose veins to persistently affect sleep. This could happen because malfunctioning veins cause another problem, restless leg syndrome, or RLS. According to the National Sleep Foundation, only about 10% of Americans are diagnosed with restless leg syndrome. This condition disrupts sleep with symptoms like “pins-and-needles” sensations, involuntary leg twitching, and intense itching. People with this condition may have difficulty sleeping due to constantly having to change positions to stop twitching and other symptoms.

Do Varicose Veins and Restless Leg Syndrome Always Go Together?

Fortunately, varicose veins do not always cause restless leg syndrome. Some studies do suggest a correlation. However, restless leg syndrome may also be caused by medications or hereditary factors. It is important to schedule a thorough health examination with a vein specialist if symptoms of varicose veins are getting in the way of a good night’s sleep. Several treatment options are now available for varicose veins. In conjunction with corrective treatment to remove affected veins, patients can also discover strategies intended to reduce the risk of future varicose veins.
