CoolSculpting is not a new treatment. We’ve seen it advertised on television and in magazines for several years now. Celebrities have spoken freely about getting CoolSculpting to slim their midsections before big events or just as a way of managing the unwanted fat that seems to linger as we get older. The noninvasive process works by targeting fat cells using precise temperature. The cooling panels of the CoolSculpting handle lower the temperature of subcutaneous fat enough so that crystals form and the fat cells are destroyed. The temperature is not so low, though, that the skin could be damaged. It’s technology at its finest, and it is referred to as cryolipolysis.

At first, the CoolSclupting procedure was done primarily on the abdomen, where stubborn fat is most notorious. New applicators made it possible to treat the thighs, the backs of the thighs under the buttocks (called the banana roll), the back near the bra line, and the backs of the arms. The latest applicator designed by the CoolSculpting manufacturer has been a game-changer. It allows people to freeze away their double chin!

CoolSculpting for the Double Chin

CoolSculpting isn’t the first double chin treatment to ever be developed. Liposuction can also be performed in this area. The reason it is not very popular is that people aren’t motivated to have surgery in such a small area. Chin or neck liposuction is usually performed as an adjunct to face or neck lift surgery. Another option that has recently become available is Kybella. This is an injection therapy similar to Botox or dermal fillers. The difference, however, is that patients must get dozens of injections in the chin and neck for Kybella to work. This creates noticeable swelling that lasts several days. By comparison, CoolSculpting is much more convenient.

To eliminate a double chin with CoolSculpting, patients schedule a series of sessions in our office. It can take 3 to 5 sessions to get the best results. Once the double chin is gone, it does not come back; significant weight gain being an exception to the norm. To begin a CoolSculpting treatment, the provider places a gel pad over the skin. This prevents sticking. The fat beneath the chin is then pulled into the applicator with gentle suction. This is not painful but can feel odd at first. As the temperature is adjusted, tingling or mild aching may be felt. Numbness occurs within a few minutes and, within an hour, the process is done. Afterward, patients may resume normal activities.
